5 Years of PMI Volunteering: The Leadership Growth I Didn’t Expect

Many professionals focus on what they can gain from their careers. Fewer intentionally focus on what they can contribute.

Five years ago, I made a conscious decision to lean into contribution through volunteering, and it has shaped my professional journey in ways I never fully anticipated.

I’m grateful to have recently been recognized by the Project Management Institute for reaching a 5-year volunteer milestone. While the recognition is meaningful, the real value has been the growth that came with the experience.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve in more than 10 volunteer capacities—supporting professionals, contributing to initiatives, and helping strengthen communities focused on project management excellence.

One lesson stands out clearly:

Volunteering is one of the most underrated platforms for leadership development.

It challenges your thinking, stretches your capacity, and exposes you to relationships and opportunities that often accelerate growth beyond what formal roles alone can provide.

If there’s one perspective I’d share with fellow professionals, it’s this:

Commit consistently to something bigger than yourself.

The long-term impact will extend far beyond what you initially set out to give.

Grateful for the journey so far, and excited for what lies ahead.

In my experience, the professionals who consistently give back through volunteering tend to become stronger leaders because they learn to influence without relying on authority. Your journey is a great reminder that contribution often creates opportunities and growth that money alone can't buy.
