Structure and professionalism
Stephen - I agree on this one, it seems that the structure and the process used is indideed an added value.

The professional way the entire process is carried out, has to make a difference.

George, what domains are your project involving? A little more detail would be helpful too since all of our advice, suggestions and wisdom can focus better. My companies for which I created or handled projects, had not really used what we now call PMBOK or BABOK guidelines. SMEs are essential to success and sometimes they have never been used by the customer. But then is the customer hiring you personally or your PMO? Customers need management and information. So that is critical to your own successful completion of the project or each of its life cycles. I created an Access Database twice in two different companies to help track not so much the Project Progress, but the vendor-consumer-customer feedback. I tied it to all current products, and the new ones being created, and entered EVERY Phone call and date and time, and a major list of all issues and questions, with domains involved and folloups, everything!
This allowed me everyday or week, or bi-monthly to provide a log and report in all different ways and then present that to stakeholders at the meetings.
This IMPROVED Communication Management, Change Control, Risk and Scope monitoring. We found that previous Requirements and Assumptions and needs were off and stakeholders misread the needs or forgot some!, and had to adjust scope. I finished the project a little ahead of time but minor over-budget (I had reserves) , but it succeeded.

Adding value to your Customer is a very general statement as we dont know what customer it is, ie consumer, normal customer contracts like a die-maker or IT ?
Steve B. Thanks for your input

For me, adding value to a customer means ensuring that at all times, the project is still aligned to the business objectives for implementing the project and also ensuring that the end product meets or exceeds the customer expectations and requirements. Yes, it's the Project Manager's responsibility to manage scope, costs, relationship, quality, etc. But at the end, the value will be realised if the business objectives are still aligned to and the project delivered meets the client needs.
Nolundi - Thanks for your input, but isn't managing project constraints our Job as PM's, I respect your answer, but I understand as added value as something more.

One of the pre-requisites would be successful completion of respective project under customer's strategic program.
Post that to add value to the program and to customer as well. This may not necessary mean alignment under respective process groups in each project, however it needs that strategically and financially where customer wants to reach (per roadmap) and guide the customer on your challenges, lessons learns and consultation over what needs to be done next (strictly in terms of functional department of the customer and impacting project deliverables) for advantage in the market.
Pranay - You GOT IT! This is the reasoning behind the question.

Any more inputs? There is a lot of scientific information regarding this topic, so much to even handle. It's a very interesting topic.

Enjoy your comment.

All comments above are valid. Business has an idea - creates a business case usually based on generalities. By the Time the PM is involved the project is approved with a set budget, time boxed and provided very limited resources.
The PM adds values as the business partner and technology partner, working with and through others to solve the problems, setting expectations. Bridging the gap between technology and users. Enabling user efficiencies and saving the organization monies. Transparent communications for informed decision, removing impediments, maintaining the big picture, ensuring tasks are completed as scheduled meeting expectations and saving monies. We add value by Problem solving. Collaboration, providing resolution, coordination and organizing activates to achieve desired results.
Victoria - I like your approach, I think your answer is on the right track.

The process of solving the problem itself it's indeed and added value, also collaboration, providing resolution, coordination and organizing activates to achieve desired results.

In my experience, PM approach led me to think beyond my boundaries in understanding the spirit of the requirements than letter and I was able to explain and get an agreement with customer on what is absolutely needed. This level of interpretation of requirements helped me to focus more on core content that adds value to customer than features that are mentioned in the requirements but doesn't meet the spirit of requirements

Project Management shows you the path to satisfy the customer needs and requirements. Processes and procedures must be fit with the environment.

It really doesn't need to be complicated, and all projects are not always so formal. It can be thought of similar as needing work done in your home. You have a list, some ideas, and a goal in mind --- a vision. You bring in a contractor, walk through the house, and talk about the items you want, show them what it is now, what you want, and why. You'll also provide some details around your vision, and a rough timeline.

The contractor takes all that information and rolls it into an organized plan, then works to complete the work in accordance to the plan. Now granted, this overview may, or may not include different team members, but in the end, whether its performed by a PM/BA or a more formal team, the PM is still part of, and driving through tasks with the assistance of the team members.

Sometimes things are not so simple. Especially in case of complicated Process Plant Construction where number of Contractors and Specialists and Licensors are involved, Schedule is extended over 3 years to 5 years or even much more, You might need an army of engineers from various disciplines to work with discipline to develop the 30% model to 90% model and do the construction sequentially with experts and commission, within Quality, Cost, HSSE, Safe, Ethical needs of the Project + Project Support expertize to speed up the processes such as expeditors, or logistics coordinators, etc. while delivering. Client will also have to have big teams with knowledge to match that of contractors to understand and take the delivery of the projects in parts on an ongoing basis. Success comes out of experience of the members involved and the way they implement both the theory and practice (mostly practice, especially lessons learnt). For projects such as building a House it may be a simple exercise; Hire an architect and an engineer and get the job done. Budget and Schedule are key elements while Quality and Safety as well tell the true story of how long and how socially responsive the project is. Lots of learning from well known organizations are needed besides certifications such as PMP which will guide your professional standing. What BOK has done is to combine all the knowledge systematically so that nothing gets missed out.

Project Management gives better understanding & appropriate approach to the project.
PM provides better understanding of the GAP between legacy & New system that is being implemented.More over it gives more advantages for users to have better understanding of change management.change management is most important thing for end users to accept the new system out comes.
