George,
All the answers above are good for you to think through the value creation topic. I will add one from my experience: talk with your customers and find out what their biggest business problems are, then think how you can solve their problems. You add value to a customer if your work solves their problems. All the best!

Project Management adds value by the utilization of the PMI framework, tools & technique that when utilized, provided a high degree of confidence that the project will meet its objectives.

Without project management, there is an extreme risk of project failure. The odds are much better with it.

I second that. That's the most important point where a PM adds value.
If you're in a hybrid role or not, staying aligned to the business objectives is another point. If you're not in a hybrid role, you have at least the duty to show where deviation of business objectives takes place - and cooperate with BA to find necessary measures.

HHHM. I love the responses. I am not practicing in PM yet, and looking for work with minimal experience in the TITLE Role of PM.
BUT I have been studying like a fiend. And Having read a lot of material on Proj Mgmnt but also on Business Analysis (BABKOK 3rd edition), I think there could be an interesting twist to answering this question, or atleast from my poor point of view.
1 - As Vistoria stated above, its true that most PM positions I have seenor spoke to others about, Initiating Group/Domain has already been done so YOUR problem is how to maintian value and efficiency with-in the box you are placed in.
2 - Studying Business Analysis, here is where you help the customer DETERMINE their BIZ Requirements through Elicitation and modeling and other technicues, many similiar to PM responsibilities, but PRIOR to the hiring of a PM.
3 - I think best solutions come from RISK MANAGEMENT FIRST and alignment with the Business Strategic goals, and the Business needs and Requirements. Performance past and lessons learned should immediately be reviewed so CHANGES can be addressed quickly before budget and schedule overruns occur due to lack of hindsight or foresight.

I know one cannot get a job as a PM or be tasked as a PM in a functional organization/enterprise with any intention of "teaching old dogs new tricks" because you'll bang your head against the wall. BUT Reviewing SCOPE and Objectives, and WBS and RAMs as you step into the "zone" and meeting ALL STAKEHOLDERS, can reveal many unexpected or ignored issues.

Im unemployed not because I'm inefficient but I had the wrong companies and they closed. And corporate culture in the USA East Coast today, doesnt want us because we are smart and aware and know the best course of action and the best possible trajectory, after we use the briliant PMBOK and BABKOK guidelines of organization and identification.

I hope my comment helps a little.

Stephen - I agree on this one, it seems that the structure and the process used is indideed an added value.

The professional way the entire process is carried out, has to make a difference.

Projects managed by professional ensure delivery of the outcome needed by the business. That is a great value add to the customer as it meets his timeline, quality and price.

PM certification is really helping me to manage projects especially creating the scope statement which making the clear to my stakeholders what is not included in scope as in telecom field, it's really hard to define scope very clearly. I personally feel very relax after adopting PM methodologies.

George, want domains does the project involve? I think SMEs are always East essential also, to ensure a successful conclusion to the project or the lifecycles within each project and feedback from end-users would be a essential. I created a customer feedback access database once for and users and their feedback which tracked dates, times, existing product usage, vendor issues, and consumer issues. This was there for quite useful at every stage because I could generate daily, weekly, monthly reports for stakeholders.

Using PM processes and procedures should help the customer to align their goals and resources in order to achieve those goals, or at minimum, clarify the needs, costs and requirements to achieve the goals. Doing so will allow for better decisions to be made.

George, what domains are your project involving? A little more detail would be helpful too since all of our advice, suggestions and wisdom can focus better. My companies for which I created or handled projects, had not really used what we now call PMBOK or BABOK guidelines. SMEs are essential to success and sometimes they have never been used by the customer. But then is the customer hiring you personally or your PMO? Customers need management and information. So that is critical to your own successful completion of the project or each of its life cycles. I created an Access Database twice in two different companies to help track not so much the Project Progress, but the vendor-consumer-customer feedback. I tied it to all current products, and the new ones being created, and entered EVERY Phone call and date and time, and a major list of all issues and questions, with domains involved and folloups, everything!
This allowed me everyday or week, or bi-monthly to provide a log and report in all different ways and then present that to stakeholders at the meetings.
This IMPROVED Communication Management, Change Control, Risk and Scope monitoring. We found that previous Requirements and Assumptions and needs were off and stakeholders misread the needs or forgot some!, and had to adjust scope. I finished the project a little ahead of time but minor over-budget (I had reserves) , but it succeeded.

Adding value to your Customer is a very general statement as we dont know what customer it is, ie consumer, normal customer contracts like a die-maker or IT ?
