I am preparing to fill out the PMI application for the PMP exam.

Any advice or suggestions on how to word my military experience into civilian PM terminology?

Here my advaise. I assume that you read and understood the handbook. The PMI selects some applications for auditing in aleatory way. So, the best thing you can do, is to assure that your are able to reach people you reference in your application just in case you are selected for auditing. Those people have to sing-off your application and you have to send the signed-off application by mail to the PMI in case you are auditing.

Make sure to document your experience in the way they ask for it by dividing it into the Initiate, Plan, Execute. Monitor & Control, Close.
