Given that assumption are low-severity risks, should we treat them as such and capture risk-associated elements such as contingency and fallback?

Hi Stephane,
a happy new year for you and thanks again for your contribution on our MP4PM initiative!
Regarding your posting i would respond that we have an additional section for "risk assessment" in the SOW map (somewhat similar to the business analysis map")also.
Assuming s related to already identified risk can be linked within the map (i will demonstrate that in the related upcoming webinar).
Since not every assuming is necessarily also a risk there should be still a separate section for assuming s, i guess.
What do you think?

Each assumption carries a risk (possibility) of being false. If it cannot be false, it should be a constraint, not an assumption.
Since assumptions are low risks, we would probably not deal with them on the risk register. They would normally be put on a watch list, instead.
I think it would be appropriate to designate a due diligence effort that would include review of assumptions, thus removing, or at least reducing, the need for contingency or fallback planning.

Hi Stephane,
got it, thanks.
The PMBoK Guide 6th edition will introduce the "assumption log" as an seperate output in the "develop project charter" process.
I guess this log is something similar like the "watch list" mentioned above, right?
The version of the map/MP4PM which will be aligned to the PMBoK Guide 6th Edition will consider this of course.
Actually we do not have this as an specific output/document (in the PMBoK Guide 5th edition) only in a more general way (project logs).
However, assumptions made should be documented in the project charter (at least on a high level) and the SOW is an Input to the charter,.
This is the reason why we have them here as a specific branch (call it the watch list if you want).
Like i understand you now we are not disagreeing here, right?
Otherwise please let me know.
Regards,
Markus

I would agree, Markus, that the assumption log acts in a similar fashion as the low-severity risks watch list.(I usually make an assumption that low-severity risks won't happen.)
I suspect that they probably have different attributes that are tracked but these should overlap. (Assumptions tend to not be treated with the same rigour as risks, even low-severity risks.)
I hope many of you will opt in to the live webinar.
See you there!
Regards,
Markus

Thank you Rami,
i am glad to have you in the audience.
Well, i guess many people outside Europe will have this time issue, cause i have to do it in the afternoon CET.
Nevertheless i heard this morning that we have already about 200 registrations and the newsletter announcement wasn't even released yet. That sounds really good and i am already excited and also a bit nervous too. ;)
Regards,
Markus
