Self awareness will help you focus on your emotions to better understand your teams emotions and help focus their performance towards project success.

There is no such thing as stakeholder management. The only person you can ever hope to control is yourself and even that is a really hard thing...

Thilo: I get it; stakeholder expectations are what PM use their influence to manage. Projects are all about people, processes and politics. Building stakeholder relationships is what is worth managing and doing it well. Agree, focus on self awareness; emotional intelligence will be one of your most important assets for 2017.

Naomi, George:

Generally you can try and manage relationships and expectations and the better your leadership qualities and your emotional intelligence the better the results for your project. But while influencing people may get them to adapt, it will not change them. That is what I learned the hard way this year: That people do not change and that in some instances your influence on people just is exactly zero. There is one stakeholder involved in a lot of my projects whose intervention in the past had caused multiple problems. This year I tried to proactively improve the relationship and for a very short while things seemed to work out, but then again there was a conflict between the project and his personal goals and Pooofff...So I realized that eventually I just can control myself, i.e. my actions and reactions towards stakeholders. And even there for deep running or emotionally laden conflicts controlling oneself is a challenge.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Thilo
