Stress is a energy that advises you on what to do. In small doses, stress has many advantages. For instance, It can help you meet daily challenges and motivates you to reach your goals and srategic objective in your organization.

It depends on how you take it. If you see positive, everything will be positive and vice versa.

Stress is inevitable and it can motivate you sometimes but you certainly need to always do proper stress management otherwise it will have negative impact.

There is a thin line between a positive and negative stress.
Physical work towards achieving something tangible, meritorious or towards a selfless act are some of the areas wherein the stress is enjoyed and seems satisfactory.
A mental stress towards an innovation or creative result is equally seen positive.
But human beings are usually tied with the emotions of whether the result will be a success or a failed attempt. If your are able to get rid of the fear of loss, then any stress becomes a positive stress.

A team that is stressed in a positive way will likely exceed expectations and come up with creative outside the box thinking. On the contrary, a team working under a bad stress environment will most likely fail to deliver. Creating a good stress environment is part of the PM effort.

Great replies ... let's look at the other side, complacency and comfort. It can be said those two feelings can produce reduced effort, motivation, or initiative to complete an effort to the best of your ability, or like Eduard points out, thinking OTB. So there is the tie in. Many times a feeling of stress will push an individual to do their absolutely best, think different, be creative, with a sense of drive and determination. I like a little str .... let's call it motivation in my life.

As other mentioned, the first thing to understand is the human being can not avoid the stress. Stress is a feeling we have under preasure and it is inside our primitive brain. On the other side we have the stressors which are the things we respond to in our environment. When you response to a challenge will be a stress involved because part of your responce is physiological and affects your physical state. So, there is not positive or negative stress. There is stress that is impossible to avoid because is the way our body activates resources to protect us. When you understand the stress is not possible to avoid, when you understand there is not negative or positive stress then you are ready to act. My recommendation is to act on your preception about the stressors and the inherent reality around them. That will help you.

Stress is good, and it helps you to challenge yourself and achieve the milestones.

But I do not agree with Anupam, that if you see it active, then it is going to be positive and visa verse.

There are many situations where you are as a Project Manager/Architect/Team Member knows that the milestones that you are targeting are not laid out with the solid foundation, and it frequently happens in many projects. In those situations, stress will create the negative effects no matter how hard you try to meet the goals.

The bottom line is the foundation of your clear project plan and strictly adhere the same. In today's work environment, we do squeeze the timeline of a project as much as possible to keep the profit margin at a very higher level. Which eventually led to poor quality deliverables.

Again, it depends on the person, project and the environment. Why you want to get stress, overcome you? Technically, I have seen people performing exceptionally well under stress.

Take it positive you will see positive side of it, see it negative everything will be negative. Tata Project was one such example :)
