Theory X or Theory Y Manager

Are you a Theory X or Theory Y Manager?

I have got a chance of working with both kind of Project Managers who follow strictly Theory X and Theory Y approach. Initially I use to be a Theory X manager where I use to follow “Carrot and Stick approach” for getting the work done. Over a period of time I moved to Theory Y working.

There could be a difference in opinion but you certainly cannot stick to only one of the Theory X or Y in today's challenging and highly demanding working environment. A seasoned project manager knows how to maintain a balance between both the ways of working.

Before writing this message, I was not aware about Theory X & Theory Y types of Manager but I was aware with the different approaches of manager's in daily practice.

We always didn't have a team of pessimistic & Optimistic resources and thus we have to act accordingly. For the Pessimistic or Theory X, we would need to build a plan to observe them on daily basis so that they would improve.
My questions is what are the techniques to convert Theory X to Theory Y?

The technique are : Mainly Soft Skills , there are many more just highlighting few of them

1. Trust your colleagues and peers
2. Understand your team well, their strength and weakness - Team building activities, informal 1 on 1s
3. Involve in work rather than assign work and connect during final review
4. Provide creative freedom and back them for right suggestions and give appropriate constructive feedback for future improvements without hurting their sentiments
5. Celebrate success together at the end it’s a team work – It is one of the major factor for keeping the team motivated
