I have PMBOK with me all the time on my tablet, with highlight and notes like a regular paper copy. I can search my comments rapidly. I also have a softcover version that I can carry when needed.
I have advise PMI of this problem with some other PMI references documents.
PMBOK version 5 let you put highlight or notes, it let you print
Version 6 prevent printing (GOOD), prevent COMMENTING (BAD), prevent Content copying (I can retype, time consuming), plus that diagonal watermark (Overkill).
Is PMI culture change? Do PMI want to facilitate usage and diffusion of PMI knowledge?
I not clear on what is serve to block PMI member from adding comments to their PDF copy. Is the print copy in a material that prevent highlighting?
Other organization such has PMI let you HIGHLIGHT! They realize that their document are reference material.
Do we need to purchase PMBOK at Amazon, can it be highlighted? Other book (specially reference book) can be highlighted!

That is really disappointing on the lock-down of the electronic version. Some groups at my company have done that with some of their documents to the distaste of others, and reversed course, so there is some hope.

Julia I certainly hope PMI will reconsider. My hope are low, I have ask for other PMI reference documents to have the same protection that was in the PMBOK guide 5th edition, never append.
Unless a large number of PMI member request they won't do it.

I agree, it is annoying. The footer should be enough and I believe the watermark is overkill. Saving Changes...

I heard in another group that a new version has been released in PDF form, which allows for bookmarks, at least. Has anyone tried to re-download their copy and use those? Saving Changes...

Update on Amazon Kindle version has also complain about a grey background.
4 negative review , in the 3 positive complain about tables that can not be seen clearly! Saving Changes...
Update on Amazon Kindle. It no longer appears available.
I ordered the paper copy to see if it was usable. The grey did not bother me but the watermark in the background is very distracting to me and made it hard to read. The reviews seem to indicate this is not the case with the Kindle version. So I am returning the paper copy but when I went to purchase the kindle version it said it is not currently available. I have checked for the past 2 weeks and still says not available. Tried doing searches online to find any update on why its not available and found nothing.

On Amazon found 8 comments on the combine paper edition all but one complain about the gray paper. Not available on Kindle.
For the PMBOK 47% rate 1 star, mostly complaints are about the gray paper.
The ebook version seem to be back

I rely on my PDF copy of the PMBOK since I can quickly search it on my tablet. I can live with the annoying watermark on the 6th ed. but losing the ability to highlight and add my own notes is beyond frustrating!
I own a printed version of the PMBOK 6th edition, but I have no desire to carry it with me on a daily basis. The whole idea of a PDF is "portability". I hope PMI changes it mind and permits the ability to at least highlight!

Ezara,
From what I found in the comments on Amazon, the ebook (PDF) version can be highlighter and commented
Not the free version you can have from PMI if member!
PMI want your good, PMI is gone get your good (read $$$$$), like one of the comments on Amazon
