Organizations are moving more and more towards an expectation of ensuring consistent practices and approaches in how their projects are managed. This is particularly true for organizations who are attempting to improve the maturity of their project management practices, where consistency is an implicit expectation of increasing maturity. The implications are significant: they create the expectation that every project in every organization will be managed in exactly the same way, using exactly the same approach.

For the individual project manager, this poses questions and creates challenges. What are the implications of true consistency? How pragmatic and appropriate is using a consistent approach? What happens when we reasonably need to adapt how we manage? In particular, how can we recognize when to comply and when a different approach may be required, and what do we do in those circumstances?

Join Mark Mullaly as he explores the promise and perils of adopting consistent practices, and provides practical guidance for the project manager on how to continue to function effectively in the face of organizational standards.
