Most projects are sold on a business case. And yet, the business case often is developed before the project starts, and without any input and involvement of the project manager. As well, benefits realization goes on far beyond when the project is closed.

Projects get done to realize benefits and deliver value. Yet the duration and focus of projects is for only a finite and specific part of the journey towards attaining that value. That raises important questions about the role of the project, and particularly of the project manager, in ensuring that value is realized.
