The Agile Enterprise: Change Management in an Agile World

Fifty years since the first agile project, Enterprise Agility is still a hot topic, and for some, it is a new domain. Started in the late 70s as an alternative to Lean Six Sigma, agile become popular in the second decade of the 21st Century when small software development teams were successful in delivering simple 'projects'. Perhaps because it was successful on a small scale, the Business was involved in new ways in the development of software solutions, or it became a must for many organizations in the modern day, agile 'escaped' software development and is now more and more considered as an option for other Business Teams. Like its predecessor, Lean Six Sigma, agile is a structural Business Transformation. When scaling up, it requires organization change management, an activity that even in traditional Project Management is done by specialized Change Managers, although it is one of the core Project Management knowledge areas.

For some agile teams, especially software development teams, the term "Change Management" is associated with the ITIL style Change Control, an engineering process created to manage risks associated with production deployment. Despite the optimistic view presented by most agile frameworks, Organization Change Management is hard. The transition to agile is often harder than any other transformation because it requires a mindset change at all levels, supported by a huge shift in the organizational culture.
