All too often, the problem that presents itself at the outset of a project isn’t the real problem at all. It might be a symptom of the problem. It may be proxy for the the real problem. At times, what we think we are doing is only tangentially related to the real work that needs to be done.
Digging out root causes is a skillset that matters. Taking the time to explore a problem before moving on to a solution is a vital capability. Figuring out what the actual problem is—and not what is described or perceived—is essential to ultimate success.
