Project HEADWAY: Important Lessons (Rarely) Learned

The importance of learning from experience is fundamental to project management. In fact, constructive and applied learning is the origin story of project management. It’s how we got to the practices that we have today.

The problem with that is that as a discipline, we tend not to learn very well at all. Applying those learnings is rarer still.

Whatever you call learning exercises—lessons learned, post-action reviews, post mortems, futurespectives—the reality is that they don’t happen nearly as often as they should. When they do happen, they are rarely as candid and honest about experience and learning opportunities as would be optimal. Even when we do gain meaningful and relevant insights, we unfortunately fail to address them in meaningful ways the next time we encounter similar situations.

The importance of learning—in projects, in teams and in organizations—is absolutely vital. The failure to learn meaningfully is tragic. Doing differently is possible, but requires a very different mindset and approach than what is typically brought to bear currently.
