The near future will bring more complex projects with more workforce diversity and distribution. Fewer leaders and stakeholders will know how to manage these situations, so they will want tighter constraints to reduce their fear. Their eyes will turn to you to make it all come together. You can set yourself apart or end up in the career landfill.
More complex projects require you to exhibit more leadership skills to be successful. A big part of these skills will be managing the workforce in a way that produces high performance. There are certain tactics that will be useful whether you are a project manager with a lot of experience or a little.
Tactic 1: Communicate Effectively to the Distributed Workforce
As businesses battle back from the recession, their rapacious needs for increased benefits from technology spreading across the organization, larger workforces will be more common and include multiple contracting groups based in a variety of geographical regions. You must have the ability to get the most out of such a diverse workforce.
Build a positive culture early by using team websites:
- Set expectations early and keep this information up front on opening pages of shared websites.
- Ask for input early from everyone using discussion sites or other internal social media. Get everyone used to participating.
