I just got my next project, and my boss wants me to meet regularly with the people from the marketing department. To be honest, I don’t understand why. That’s something that happens after my team and I finish our job and release the project to the other parts of the company, who work with it later. My time is precious. Should I waste it in extra meetings with other parts of the organization​?

A. When a project manager is asked to work more closely with another part of the value stream, it is frequently an indication that your current role is about to be removed as obsolete. Being asked to learn about marketing during this potentially final project may be a sign that you are valued, and being trained for a possible department move rather than fired. Embrace this chance with open arms.

B. The PM role keeps evolving. It is now far wider than just overseeing a team to create a process, software or product for the company. To assure success with our current organization and to prepare for possible future upgrades in our status, it is extremely advantageous to expand our knowledge and understanding of how to increase the value of our project’s output to bring in extra financial return for our employers.
