Style Mismatch in Communication? Does It Really Exist?
From the Communication Excellence in Project Management Blog
by Bill Brantley
Although Project Managers spend 90% of their time communicating, communication in project management is the most underdeveloped skill for project managers. This blog will help Project Managers become better communicators and thus, better Project Managers.

If you have been in the work environment long enough, you will probably take one type of personality test or another. There is the Myers-Briggs, the DiSC, and many others. At the end of the test you end up with a letter code, color code, or some type of neatly-defined category. The idea is that if you understand your co-workers' types, then you can communicate better.
In a recent Forbes article, we have another set of types that explains why you and your boss don't communicate well. He or she might be analytical while you are personal . The key is to speak analytically to your boss while your boss learns to speak personally to you.
These types may have some explanatory power but, is this the whole story behind miscommunication? We all know that people communicate differently given the context of a situation. For example, I speak differently to my friends when I am relaxing at a restaurant then when I am in a business meeting with colleagues. Also, most of us are easily adept at adjusting our communication styles to speak to different people.
It is my contention that communication styles play only a small part in miscommunication. The reason that miscommunication occurs is not a fundamential communication style mismatch; it is the inability to communicate effectively so as to engage the listener's attention. This may be because speaker didn't form a good message and/or the listener may be distracted by external factors.
Thus, I believe miscommunication is a matter of engagement and not a matter of style.
What do you think? Is there a valid personality test that explains miscommunication?

Hi Bill,
I think other factors are at play, the background of each. By background I include education, previous experience and any other thing that would have built the person.
Yes, some type of individual is more analytic some more … and to get to them interested you are better to talk their language.
A good leader should be efficient at communicating with various types of “personalities”
The other part that will affect the way a communication is received is the agenda of the individual.

I think miscommunication can be down to a number of things and I agree with totally with Vincent's points. One of the things I think colors a person's understanding of what is being communicating to them may be their agenda but also their general view of the person they are receiving that communication from.
I also agree with Vincent. Personality types can play a role but, I feel it is a smaller role than is justified by all the attention to behavioral testing and consulting. I think a bigger factor is the quality of the communication environment.
Given that communication is both the sending and receiving of information, I think communication styles can play a significant role in miscommunication.
When "flexing" our communication style for a particular scenario, I think we focus more on changing the style with which we send information. Perhaps a stronger focus on flexing our listening style would help.
