What Makes Your Software so Special?

Situation: You want to know more about the software than the salesguy...

AbstractYou can find some pretty cool stuff in the Google patent database.  Software packages are pretty hard to tell apart, but when a vendor really has something special, they always try to protect it.  Not that useful in a practical sense - just interesting to explore.

Large Scale Team Building

Situation: You want to do some teambuilding, but have no clue what to do...

I hate traditional team building stuff.  Show me a ropes course in use and  I'll show you a dozen people who wish they were somewhere else.  So if you're looking for something different - take your project team to the next Big Game!

Here's how Area Code, the company that runs them,  describe a "Big Game".

Big Games are large-scale, real-world games. A Big Game might involve transforming an entire city into the world's largest board game, or hundreds of players scouring the streets looking for invisible treasure, or a TV show reaching out to interact with real-time audiences nationwide.

or here's another option...

Here locally, I also keep threatening to enter our gantthead team in the local Cardboard Regatta.  These are held anywhere there's a large body of water and if there isnt one being held naearby, you can certainly hold your own.

and one more...

Dodgeball Leagues are coming back with a vengance and are STILL popular, years after the movie came out.  What could be more fun than putting your whole team in harm's way?

Ebay for SaaS

Situation: You're looking for a free PMO app or PM SaaS solutions.

AppExchangeSoftware as a service (Saas) is a pretty hot buzzword these days in IT.   It is essentially web-based commercial software that is managed by the vendor.  Many of these can be great if the software is essentially what you need "as is"  without customization.  This is often true if what you are looking for sits outside of your organization's core competency or if you are just dealing with some basic, generic requirements.  Salesforce.com has an interesting service to help you find these applications called AppExchange .

In my travels through the site I found some neat litlle apps that many of us would find useful.

- This adoption dashboard helps you track the usage (one measure of success) of the application you just delivered.
- There's also a free Project and Issue Management App that's worth a look.
- Many leading PM software vendors have apps on the exchange.
- There's even a free app, StraightThrough PMO,  that might be a good starting point if you have a new PMO.

Managing Internal Risk

Situation: You've been making a lot of decisions on the fly lately...

I read this cover story a couple of days ago on a plane - "Why We Worry About the Wrong Things, The Psychology of Risk."  by Jeffrey Kluger.  Even though it's really about the personal, sort of everyday risks that we all take, I thought it was particularly relevant to what we as Project Managers do for a living.

The author talks about the following reasons for our natural mis-perception of risks, saying:
- our pre-historic brains are pre-programmed to have fight or flight reactions to certain stimuli.(when we intuitively feel threatened, we react)
- we naturally are troubled more by the prospect of pain and suffering than even death.  The closer in time we are to the unfortunate event, the more motivated we are to react.
- we fool ourselves into thinking we are less likely to suffer a bad outcome if we are in control (driving a car vs. being a passenger on a plane)
- we need to be particularly skeptical of statistics, as they can be rigged to say anything.

He concludes the piece by recommending we all make more reasoned, rather than intuitive choices.

I think he makes a good point.  We need to be mindful of:
- how we react when we feel threatened.
- how we overreact when we feel like our reputation or career might suffer.
- how we sometimes take on tasks that would be better done by others, even though they might do things differently.
- decisions based purely on numbers.

Free Desktop Apps from Google

Situation: You need a low budget (or maybe just quick and easy) way to create and share a doc or spreadsheet.

I was pretty skeptical about these at first, but Google Docs & Spreadsheets are very functional and you can't beat the price.

They:
- easily convert in and out of standard formats.
- offer some pretty cool collaborative functions
- are easily shared over the web on Google's servers

Here's an example of a simple Word Doc deliverable template from gantthead.  Here is the same thing on Google Docs & Spreadsheets.
