I'm not a lot of movies, but I have a group of graduate students who do, so I want to take advantage of that hobby for the subject, what movies do you recommend related to PM? As to make analogies and illustrate the perspective of PMI. Thanks in advance
That was my choice, as well. I would add that it includes a 1) project reset, 2) unmanaged risks and of course 3) sabotage. Sounds like your traditional enterprise project to me ;)
The Great Escape is another one. Planning the tunnels, organizing the work and who will go where after they are outside the fence. Saving Changes...
The Bridge on the River Kwai - The film uses the historical setting of the construction of the Burma Railway in 1942–1943.
The film is an example of excellent people management. Nicholson’s battalion is experienced in building such bridges and he quickly takes over operations. One scene where the plans for the bridge are discussed provides many lessons. We see Colonel Nicholson bring up a change he wants to make to the requirements. He explains that the bridge needs to be relocated. To justify his request, he hands the meeting over to his engineer, who provides the technical evidence to support the change. The change is approved, because the change request had been properly analysed.
What we see in the film is a lack of strategy alignment. The british had the responsibility of completing the bridge. Unfortunately, it is totally at odds with the larger British army’s vision of winning the war. Project Managers often get caught up in these situations. While the Project Manager may deliver well, the work may provide no benefit to the corporate strategy. Saving Changes...
A lot of todays project management methodology came from the defence industry and especially during the times of the space race when the two super powers were vying for supremacy. All the moving parts required in launching a space shuttle or a Soyuz capsule requires an incredible amount of strict project management principles being adhered to as you are sending people into the unknown on vehicles that cannot be fully tested until they have been launched into space. On that note I think the Apollo 13 movie especially the scene were the solve they Oxygen/CO2 scrubbers problem is a good example of project management methodology working under stressful and limited time conditions. Thanks Tassos! Come on, people. Nobody mentioned heist movies? Those are usually the best examples of management skills related to projects.
As it is mentioned by Tassos earlier, take a look at Oceans´s movies ... and look further for the leadership skills, risks analysis, time strategy and most important ability to push towards the goal. Saving Changes...
Besides the story line that hold significant project management ideas as cited earlier, other aspects of a movie do similarly. Without citing specific movies, sceneries of the built and natural environments and screen shots of the performances inform design project managers who glean ideas from the movies. Communication design, urban design and spatial design management can be informed through references to parts of movies. Saving Changes...
