I’m reaching out as both a former PMP holder and a current PMI volunteer.
I recently learned that once a PMP certification lapses and exceeds your data retention window (5yr), the credential holder is no longer visible in the public registry in any form. From a practitioner standpoint, this creates a gap that seems misaligned with PMI’s broader mission of advancing the profession.
As it stands, an experienced project leader who maintained the PMP for years and continues to practice at a high level becomes indistinguishable, in the public record, from someone who never held the certification at all. This doesn’t reflect the reality of professional development, nor does it fully support employers or stakeholders seeking context around a candidate’s background.
It seems there could be value in a middle-state designation (e.g., “previously certified” or similar), which preserves the integrity of the active credential while maintaining historical continuity for practitioners.
Is this something PMI has evaluated or considered evolving? I would be interested in understanding the rationale behind the current policy and whether there are plans to revisit it.
Appreciate any perspective, I'm sure I'm not the first to raise this line of questioning and concern. But I'm unable to understand the strategy in online forums, CCRs, PMI content. ...
