Hello everyone,

I’m seeking advice on transitioning into project management after more than six years in software development. My experience includes requirements analysis, release coordination, facilitating team status calls, documenting issues and dependencies, and collaborating with clients and technical teams.

Following a career break after relocating to the US, I earned my CAPM certification and completed the University of Washington’s Project Management Certificate this year. I’m based in Redmond, Washington, and have been actively job searching for about a month, focusing on project coordinator, associate project manager, and technical delivery roles.

One challenge I’m encountering is that many entry-level or associate positions ask for two to three years of experience leading projects. My experience has involved supporting and coordinating delivery rather than independently managing projects from start to finish.

I would appreciate your perspective:

  1. How do employers evaluate coordination experience gained within software engineering roles against these project-leadership requirements?
  2. Would you recommend applying to these positions, or targeting other roles where I can first build project ownership?
  3. How can I present my transferable experience effectively without overstating my responsibilities?
  4. What practical experience or volunteer opportunities helped you make a similar transition?

I’m open to paid and volunteer opportunities where I can contribute my existing skills while building hands-on project management experience.
