PROJECT MANAGEMENT DELIVERABLES

Hi everyone! I am still new in project management scope I would appreciate if anyone who experience in project to explain what is deliverables in project. In my own understanding, deliverables is the tools to keep each phases in the project planning realiable and connected to prevent the scope to get off track. If this is false, Your help will be meaningful.

A project deliverable is usually a tangible product delivered to a customer - the whole purpose for the project. You can build the Work Breakdown Structure based on these deliverables.

If I understand you correctly, I would call what you are describing either phase or process deliverables. They are important to the execution of the project and keeping it on track, but they are not the final deliverables that you turn over to the customer. These types of deliverables would end up being tasks or work packages on the Work Breakdown Structure.

Yes, a Project Deliverable is often a milestone during the Project Lifecycle/Project Schedule at which you deliver a document or product to the customer and they have to review, agree, and sign off on it. Sometimes a deliverable/sign off is a point at which the project team/company gets a partial payment on the project depending on how the SOW is setup!

PMBOK 5th Edition defines -

"A deliverable is any unique and verifiable product, result or capability to perform a service that is required to be produced to complete a process, phase, or project.

Deliverables are typically tangible components completed to meet the project objectives and can include elements of the project management plan."

A deliverable is a measurable and tangible outcome of the project. Quantifiable goods or services that will be provided upon the completion of a project.
the tools to keep each phases in the project planning realiable and connected to prevent the scope to get off track could be more a management scope's tool.

To build upon Aaron's explanation. A deliverable is a work package you give the client. Not all work packages are deliverables.

Deliverables are various intermediate produce, those are required to produce final deliverable of project. Example for a project of constructing building drawings are deliverable, approved designs are deliverable, approved schedule is deliverable, material test reports are deliverable. All these deliverable have some kind of value to produce final outcome of project and will impact time, cost & quality triangle.

We tend to call those interim phase deliverables work products, to differentiate from the project deliverables. Work products are also often associated to phase/gate types of projects, where certain work products are required to exit each phase/gate.

To start, certainly comply with the definition provided in the PMBOK.
For me, it is helpful to define both Deliverables and Artifacts.
Deliverables are the outputs of project work that the Stakeholders value. The reason they fund the project in the first place. (Think of these as "Product")
Artifacts are the tools we use to manage projects in order to complete Deliverables within the tie and budget allowed. These include the Project Management Plan, Project Schedule, Project Budget, and more. (Think of these as "Project")
One could certainly argue that Artifacts as defined here are Deliverables. It helps me to separate the two in order to focus my communications with the Stakeholders on the value generating Deliverables, and focus communications with the project team and governing PMO on the Artifacts to ensure we get the work done right.
