Following on from Vincent's precise reply - here is a little more:
I must say, that the blurb provided by PRINCE2 oweners Axelos, does not help the reader to zone in on the differences between PMP and PRINCE2 - yet both are compolimentary AND different!
Let me deal first with PRINCE2. It is a process-based approach that defines the roles for not just the project manager but for the entire team and everyone involved in the project.
In short, PRINCE2 is a FRAMEWORK for projects - for any insdustry, and is intened to be tailored to suit each project. Such tailoring includes changing from a traditional waterfall project to an Agile one. In fact anything from a small, low risk, low cost, short project to the converse!
PRINCE2 describes such tailoring and gives examples.
I am sure you all understand PMI's PMP Certification, and that it is a professional Project Management Certification.
There are some commonalities between both. For instance, the PMBOK Knowledge Areas of risk and human resources are detailed in what PRINCE2 calls Themes: Business Case, Organization, Quality, Plans, Risk, Change and Progress.
So do you need both qualifications? My answer would be yes, since PMP, despite its 49 Processes, does not explixitly provide a project framework for success (including the various roles in addition to the project manager)

I suspect you meant PRINCE2 Practitioner certification versus PMI PMP certification?
(There is also a PRINCE2 Foundation and a PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certification.)
The PRINCE2 Practitioner certification has no education or experience pre-requisite, like the PMP. The only pre-requisite to taking the Practitioner certification exam is having one of the following certifications:
PRINCE2 Foundation
PMP
CAPM
IPMA Level A
IPMA Level B
IPMA Level C
IPMA Level D
I always describe Prince2 as a methodology or governance approach that can be used by trained Project Managers in an environment where Prince2 is well understood and adopted.

Adding to David Litten's contribution and having recently attained both credentials, I think both are needed and are complementary.
I found PRINCE2 strong on processes and PMP strong on tools and techniques. I also found that PRINCE2 is more structured in the way it approaches the early stages of a project, while PMP covers Stakeholder engagement in more structured manner.
Again I found PRINCE2 more structured in the Project closure process.
Definitely you will find PRINCE2 more friendly with the PMP knowledge.
