The project was centred around a significant challenge faced by Ireland’s National Broadband Plan (NBP) - the estimation of tree trimming required for the installation of fibre-optic cable across nearly 100,000km (62,137 miles) of road network, covering 96% of Ireland’s landmass. This massive project was undertaken by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) on behalf of the Department for the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC).

The project aimed to replace subjective contractor surveys with a systematic LiDAR survey and model for tree trimming works, a critical part of the NBP. The benefits included speedier deployment, accurate estimation of quantities, reduced traffic disruption, and safer working environments. Key tangible outcomes were demonstrated scalability, with the method approved for 50 DA’s across 14,000km (8,699 miles) of route in 2023/2024, and accuracy, with less than 5% delta between the LiDAR model output and verified field work. Schedule integrity was also maintained.
