What does it mean to lead? Especially when, as a project manager, you often have far less formal influence in the organization?

As project managers, we are in an interesting position. We are called on to lead what are often significant, large-scale and strategically important initiatives. And yet organizationally, we often face challenges of influence, accountability, authority and ownership. We must co-ordinate, inspire and support our team members. We need to align and manage the expectations of our stakeholders. We are called on to run interference with managers in the organization. We have to exercise influence with our sponsors. And none of these challenges got explained while we learned about Gantt charts, resource histograms and critical path analyses.

Effective project management isn't about just co-ordination, management and administration. Excellence in project management draws on leadership. We must motivate, inspire, engage, encourage, connect and persuade. We need to gain agreement even in situations where we have no influence, authority or perceptual power. We need the motivation to get up every morning, take on the world and believe that we can win.

In this presentation, Mark Mullaly explores the leadership challenges associated with the project management role. He identifies the critical leadership capabilities that are most valued by team members and most sought by executives. Most importantly, Mark identifies strategies and approaches to build, develop and continue to enhance our leadership capabilities. Leadership is what defines success. Join us and define your path to becoming a more successful leader.
