Overview

Project management is a sophisticated discipline, and the professionals who practice it bring a depth of skills that span methodology, systems thinking, and sustained stakeholder engagement. What the field has not yet done is fully name what the role requires of the person holding it: leadership, exercised not occasionally, but as the defining work of the position. This session makes that case directly. Drawing on an Integrated Practice Modelâ„¢ framework, it builds a PM-specific leadership framework that goes beyond general frameworks to fill the gap they leave for project managers. Participants examine three domains of project management practice, apply a five-dimension Leadership Architecture as a lens for honest self-examination, and engage in a practical scenario involving AI-augmented project work. The session closes with a practical reflection participants can act on immediately. Participants leave with a reframed professional identity, a vocabulary for the leadership work they
are already doing, and a concrete development framework built specifically for the PM role.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish between leadership as a competency added to the PM role and leadership as the organizing posture of the role itself, and apply the three-domain framework of project management practice -- Technical Expertise, Coordination, and Leadership Decisions -- to assess the distribution of demands in their current context.
  • Use the five dimensions of the Leadership Architecture of Project Managementâ„¢ as a self-assessment framework to identify specific areas for deliberate development, and commit to at least one concrete leadership behavior to carry into the immediate work environment.
  • Evaluate how AI-driven workflow automation is reshaping the leadership demands of the PM role, and why increased AI adoption raises, rather than reduces, the premium on human judgment and influence
