Not all projects or organizations are the same or even similar. Not all tools and techniques explained in PMI global standards apply to all projects; and sometimes, all of the effort applied to a project does not result in success.However, there are four steps that can be followed to help project managers achieve strategic success.

Achieving Strategic Success
Frequently, project managers are brought into a project to perform immediately. However, it is important to stop and think critically about the project before getting started. This article shares an integration of knowledge based on PMI Standards, such as A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Fifth Edition, Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®) – Third Edition, and the PMI Practice Standard for Configuration Management that project managers can understand and apply from the very beginning of a project. This knowledge provides insight on how to proceed, and therefore, use adequate tools and techniques to move toward strategic success. This guide details four steps of a project management model that can be followed to help achieve project success:
