Do you know an experienced project manager assigned to a high-visibility project who keeps asking himself and others why he was selected? Colleagues and managers believe this individual is the ideal candidate. He brings strong industry knowledge, leadership skills and relationships across the organization that will lead to a successful project.

Yet he still doubts himself. In fact, it’s estimated that 70 percent of people feel they don’t deserve their station in life.

In the late 1970s, psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes coined the term “Imposter Syndrome” to refer to the idea that capable individuals find it hard to believe in their own capabilities or internalize their own accomplishments. These people see evidence of their competence as mere luck and sometimes feel they are not actually qualified for the position they hold.

For a while, I suffered from the Impostor Syndrome. Then I had two wake-up calls. The first came at the PMI Global Congress 2008—Latin America in São Paulo, Brazil. I met two members of the PMI Mexico Chapter who found out that I had recently achieved the Program Management Professional (PgMP) credential. They were more excited than I was about the achievement. I didn’t realize that I had not made the PgMP credential an important part of me.

The second wake-up call was at the workplace. I was part of a 360-degree evaluation process, and I discovered that the scores I provided to describe my performance were quite a bit lower than the feedback provided by my peers.

In my mind for many years, I was an imposter. In the eyes of others, I was crackerjack.

I was and stlll am kind of bother by this "imposter syndrome". Psychologically, i think it is just behavor of lacking of confidence, which everyone did . People always see good things about us while we put more more attention to our weakness. It is not good but not avoidable.

Not sure about the details but self belief is the key of success. You must believe and trust on your skills and moves.

One can and will typically seek and receive guidance when in doubt if intentions are sincere. Have the will and either gain or tap the skill to overcome. I cannot recall ever experiencing "imposter syndrome". Nor can I recall anyone being perfect 100% of the time.

Thank you for your comment. Congratulations! You may one of the luckiest 30% of people who do not experience impostor syndrome.
With the guidance and advice from my PMI Mexico Chapter and my former boss during the 360 degree evaluation helped me to realize that I was being too "strict" on myself assessments. After those two events I change my mindset.
I agree on your comment about perfection that is why I purse excellence not perfection.

I agree with you that self belief is the key of success. But sometimes a wake-up call may be needed to set you back to the right track and keep believing in yourself.

The point is to take more seriously the sincere comments from people about us and focus on those rather than our weakness. I can tell you it takes time to reset your mindset but you need to try everyday.

I think I still suffer from the "imposter syndrome" on occasion. I think people just need that re-inforcement/verification from others now and again. Not sure if it is a nature/nurture thing though. I guess it could be both. We are conditioned to verify ourselves from a young age - exams etc and some people are more self confident than others.

It is evaluated that self evaluation is at about 80% of the evaluation done by others.

Pravin point about self estime/confidence is so true.

Who don't appreciate feedback from other, specially when positive and constructive
