Situation: Your Staff (or YOU) Need To Spend More Time Working and Less on the Web.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with spending all day every day on the web... but I know it can be a productivity issue in some organizations.

8aWeek won't alter your behavior or micromanage you in any way, but it IS a quick and easy way to monitor your internet usage. If you have an employee that seems to spend all of their time on facebook, ask them to download this and see what their usage looks like after a week.  I'm not saying YOU should monitor it, but perhaps letting them do it themselves will help them understand how much of their work day is devoted to surfing.

I picked this site and the attached graphic up from Techcrunch , more details on the app are available in their blog posting.

I definitely think there is a difference between good surfing and bad surfing. The internet provides an outlet for expanding networks (important for salespeople) and conducting research or professional growth. Having said this, there is alot of stupid surfing as well. Piano-playing cats and looking for a date are included on this.

There is always down-time at work. The question is how someone uses it. I find gantthead to be extremely helpful for building my own thought leadership. If managers do think that there is problem, then they need to relook how they are distributing work among their subordinates. There may be a task management issue in the office.

Hello Joseph

I wouldn't say that looking for a date is stupid surfing: we have online businesses making millions out of that human need, right? In my mind, all businesses are trying ti satiate the various human needs and wants...be it--social networking or dating and each of these has it's own space in the customer mind.

From a pure project mgmt vantage point, looking for a date through surfing can appear childish though. But, in reality, it's just one of the avenues for the modern man at his disposal!

Just to clarify, this blog is talking about people doing bad surfing on the internet AT WORK. Looking for a date or Piano-playing are not bad but doing that at work would be bad. I guess that is what Joseph meant.

It is a great idea to monitor surfing habits. It is very easy to absorb yourself in something on the web and the next thing you know an hour goes by. There is definitely good surfing and bad surfing. Each and every organization and particular person would probably define what good and bad may be a little differently. Some people in their jobs would benefit from surfing current events, for example, whereas others may not find any value in the performance of their work. Finding a date would probably not count as good surfing habits at all whereas viewing some profiles on Facebook or other social sites would probably be helpful if you are researching or current perspective clients.
