Simple Project Charter

By

Format: Proposal

The simple project charter form is used to formally initiate the project. There is often a lot of confusion about what a project is, when it gets produced and what it should contain.

A good project charter gets produced as soon as the project starts (and before any planning is done in earnest). It is the earliest definition of what the project is intended to accomplish, why it is being initiated and what the organization expects as a result.

Given that even at the earliest stage of a project, there are expectations about time, cost and effort, space has been provided for this information within the template. It is important to note, however, that these should be high-level, order-of-magnitude numbers. They are not (and should not be interpreted as) the results of detailed planning.

Once the project charter is approved, the organization is considered to have an initiated project. The next stage after this may be an exploratory discovery process, conducting a feasibility study, developing a business case or more formally planning the project.

This template includes a description, instructions, and guidelines for adapting.
