While it is important for project managers to recognize the efforts of the project team as a whole, there are times when they should also acknowledge the efforts of individuals on the team.

When an individual team member stands out in some way – whether by pitching in to help another team member, managing a challenging stakeholder, or going out of her way to complete a task on time – acknowledge that individual team member.

Do these three simple things:

  • Write (yes, write!) a “thank you” to the team member.

  • In a team meeting acknowledge the individual’s contributions.

  • Send an email to the team member’s manager to let them know the efforts of the individual.

What are some things you have done to acknowledge individual members of the team?

A good place to publicly appreciate outstanding efforts could be the agenda item "lessons learned" of a weekly team meeting where this individual could present in 5 minutes the challenges and how she managed them.

Yes, good work should always be appreciated and without much delay. If the team members are colocated, then just walking down to him/her and uttering a few words of praise can go a long way to win the member.

1. Appreciate team as a whole
2. Appreciate team member - if writing email then keeping the complete team in loop (Pubic appreciation)
3. Take the opportunity to celebrate "Party Time"

Nice article, Thanks for sharing.

Simple yet effective way for successful teams is to identify and appreciate the efforts and support for the improvements.

Always remember, appreciation is the key to motivate.

There's nothing like a one on one with the person sometime prior to the team meeting where you plan to recognize them to thank them for their contributions. It's a good time to hand them that handwritten note, too.
