We know the profession of project management is evolving – just like we are as an association. With that in mind, the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam will be updated in December to ensure it reflects up-to-date practices and equips project managers with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in today’s modern project environments.
Leading up to this change, you’ll find news and information here to help you address the needs of your students as they earn PMP status.
Exam Updates
Every 3-5 years we conduct research to understand how the profession has progressed, the impact of emerging trends, and how the responsibilities of project managers have changed. The last round of this research was conducted in 2015 and resulted in the current PMP exam content outline.
Subject matter experts from leading organizations around the world are currently working with us to define the PMP of the future. As this effort advances, we will keep you informed on key outcomes and help you prepare for the upcoming changes to the PMP.
The NEW PMP® Exam Content Outline provides the framework of what you can expect on the PMP Exam after 15 December 2019.
NEW! PMP Exam Content Crossover Map
The PMP Exam Content Crossover Map will help you identify areas of content to update your PMP Exam Prep Course so it is aligned to the 2019 Exam Content Outline (ECO). This document is only a guideline to identify what possible content from your old course you may want to repurpose.
Please use the following exam content outlines in conjunction with the crossover document to identify content:
- Current PMP Exam Content Outline
- New PMP Exam Content Outline

I'm getting a lot of questions on what is really changing in the Dec 2019 exam, especially the statement, “About half of the examination will represent predictive project management approaches and the other half will represent agile or hybrid approaches.” Can someone clarify how people writing the questions are deciding which ones are agile and which are not? Also, which questions fit under each category of people, process, or business. The new exam guidelines are very confusing...
Hi Kathryn. I would suggest an IIL webinar that will answer all your questions: https://iil.com/free-webinars/pmp-updates/
