August Book Club
| We are excited to announce the ProjectManagement.com August book club! The book club provides an opportunity to participate in webinars and discussions around selected books relevant to the overall practice of project management. The book club occurs in three parts:
The first 25 PMI Members registered for the closing book club webinar will receive a complimentary copy of the book and will be notified via email. Additional participants will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book at their own expense. All community members will be able to view the book club opening webinar and participate in the discussion forum. PMI members will be able to participate in the book club closing webinar. We will evaluate the content of each opening and closing book club webinar to determine the eligibility and breakdown for PDUs. Our book club book for August is A Team of Leaders; Empowering Every Member to Take Ownership, Demonstrate Initiative, and Deliver Results by Paul Gustavson, Stewart Liff. Paul W. Gustavson is an author, board member and consultant specializing in strategy and the design of high performance teams and organizations. In 2012, he co-authored a popular book “Running into the Wind, Bronco Mendenhall, Five Strategies for Building Successful Teams”. He has served on the Marriott School of Management’s OB/HR Advisory Board for over 20 years. He has over 40 years of consulting, research and hands on experience working on global projects, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions and startups. Paul’s work has been featured in over 50 books, company magazines and periodicals. Stewart Liff is the President and CEO of Stewart Liff & Associates, Inc., a California-based consulting and training company. Prior to that he worked for the Federal government for 32 years and led several impressive transformation efforts. One of them resulted in Vice President Al Gore’s first Hammer Award for reinventing government while the other led to his office receiving the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s prestigious PILLAR (Performance Incentives Leadership Linked to Achieving Results) Award. A classically trained artist, he has written seven books, five on Human Resources, one on visual management and his most recent one, A Team of Leaders, co-authored with Paul Gustavson, was named one of the 30 best business books of 2014 by Soundview Executive Book Summaries and the Leadership Book of the Week by the Washington Post. In 2012, Tolitha was appointed to the Leadership Team of the Consulting CoP, now referred to as the Consulting practice area, and has been a leader in the webinar program ever since. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Tolitha is a Sr. Project Manager. You've done it! You've joined the ProjectManagement.com community and started connecting with other members to build your network. Now what? How do you go about the business of building relationships with the people you have connected with? If you're having some trouble trying to figure out how to move forward, here are a few tips. Offer Assistance Whether you are new to the community or have been here since the beginning, we strongly encourage you to join conversations. Offer assistance to another member who is working through an issue or provide an answer to a question. Would you rather address someone privately? Make use of the Inbox feature here in the community. However, when using the Inbox feature we ask that you do so wisely. Please do not send private messages offering discounts on services or products or send messages that may be perceived as promotional. Make sure your communication has a purpose and is beneficial to the member you are addressing. Share Knowledge All members of the community have different levels of expertise. This creates a ripe opportunity to act as a knowledgeable resource to someone who is new to the profession or trying out a new skill. We strongly believe that peer to peer connections is the best way to gain knowledge and advance your career. Use your network to share ideas or collaborate on a project. Develop the relationships you create within the community and utilize them to move your career - and the profession - forward. Contribute You have probably had conversations with people you are connected to here in the community on a myriad of topics. You might have even joked and said something along the lines of "we should write an article about that!" Well...maybe you should! Collaborate with those in your network that you share common interests and expertise with. Create an article, white paper, or join together and present a webinar to the community. Share what you know or discoveries that you've made through your connections to contribute to the greater professional body of knowledge. You never know what other opportunities may arise from it! There are many ways to utilize your network and build professional relationships within the community, and these are just a few suggestions to help get you started. | Over the next few weeks you'll see a few changes on ProjectManagement.com. We are excited about the changes and would like to share a few things you can look forward to finding! Website Navigation We are making changes in the website navigation to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for. We’re also going to be refreshing the look and feel of the site. That way you can spend less time hunting for what you want and more time interacting with it! Webinars We are making multiple updates to the webinar page to enhance your experience. These include the addition of a “My Certifications” box that will show you your individual certifications and PDU requirements. You will also notice recommended webinars for you based on your individual certification needs! Additionally, all accounts linked to PMI.org credentials will display webinar recommendations based on the PDUs you need to satisfy your Talent Triangle requirements. These changes should make it far easier to know exactly which webinars can help your development. Discussions Our current discussions show you lots of boards and that can make it hard to find what you're looking for. We will be streamlining this list to make it easier for everyone to get right into the discussions. Don't worry, we are keeping Project Management Central and incorporating some new, helpful boards to help the discussions stay current and fresh! Keep an eye out over the next few days for the first of these changes. They will roll out individually, and we look forward to sharing them with you! |

Our book club book for July is The Project Manager's Little Book of Cheats by Beth Spriggs. Beth Spriggs, PMP, is an experienced project manager, trainer, and speaker. For more than 17 years she's solved unsolvable problems, tamed unruly projects, and pulled off the impossible for organizations by deploying projects that work for customers while positioning clients for what's coming next. Her extensive portfolio consists of everything from bite-sized undertakings to years-long overhauls that impact every aspect of the organization. She began her professional career in information technology in 1999 and has combined her love for tech and project management by focusing her career on managing technology projects and portfolios. Some of Beth's contributions include delivering webinars for ProjectManagement.com, speaking at NTEN's Nonprofit Technology Conference and the DC Web Women's Conference. About the book: There is no such thing as cheating in project management, but if there were it would be this book. It includes quick steps, relevant tips, fun stories, and applicable advice to solving common problems and questions focused around the work of a project manager. The book is in question / answer format with 11 chapters covering 65 questions.
