Project Management

An Influential Project Manager

by
Today, more than ever, a project manager needs to be an influencer. The purpose of this blog is to stimulate your journey towards greater influence. With influence, you can overcome the roadblocks thrown in your way, overcome opposition, align stakeholders and, enjoy your role even more. However, since I know you are busy, the posts here will be short (about a minute), thought provoking and also drive you towards action. Feel free to connect with me, ask me questions, and share what's good here.

Jerking Your Chain

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

Who is having a laugh at you right now?

They say something, do something, that makes you mad.

Do they do it on purpose? Surely not, they are just ignorant.

Either way, you have a problem.

For when they do something that gets you mad/angry/frustrated/sad, they have disturbed you.

Deliberate or not, their behaviour has influenced you.

Question is, does that help you or them?

Hmmm, maybe it’s time you stopped those automatic reactions and allowing others to jerk your chain.

Learn to stay in control.

Escalate and Suffer

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

It is vital to have escalation procedures in place.

Natural to hit a problem and refer it to your boss.

Easy to throw the issue to someone else to deal with.

Yet whenever you escalate, you pass responsibility and control to others.

You are not standing on your own two feet, rolling your sleeves up and living up to your potential.

And in so doing, you reinforce dependence, stunt your learning and look incompetent.

Escalate appropriately as a last resort, maintaining awareness of the long-term implications – for your credibility.

In Pursuit of Self-Reliance

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

Free yourself from the influence of external events, people and things.

Free yourself from those with hidden agendas and obscure pitches, those who play your emotions and your past.

Once you free your mind and heart, even from your past, then you can decide and be strong and independent – you can call the shots, in your life.

And, with this innate quality and strength, you can engage in the world around you with compassion, spirit, drive and enthusiasm.

Because deep sown, you know you’re in control. You will have self-reliance.

No man is an island, yet without inner strength you become a slave.

Thoughts?

Engaging in the Dark Arts

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

If you don’t do politics...
...you are either naive, stupid or negligent.

Well, I suppose you might also be lacking in ambition or simply can’t be bothered.

Whatever, attempting to deny the reality that workplace politics surrounds everything you do, or avoiding engaging in politics is madness.

And, destined to failure.

Why?

(Incidentally the reference to Dark Arts came for a high-ranking client Project Manager. It was his phrases for these mysterious practices)

Track me down on LinkedIn and/or find my Influence Blog to dive deeper into these Dark Matters!

Do You Trust the Data?

linkedin twitter facebook Request to reuse this

Virtually all data presented today is biased towards the presenter’s agenda.

This bias manifests in selective data, convenient data contexts, opinion masquerading as data and narrative delivered as objective fact.

Which is a major problem when you need to make a decision based on that data.

Helping people make good decisions is the central thrust of ethical influence, and biased data does not qualify as ethical influence in my book.

While the intent may be pure, the method is anything but.

Why?

Because if people agree with the agenda of the presenter, they are doing so with incomplete information, and that is certainly not the way I wish to be influenced. I want to be helped to make a the right decision, but I will not be hoodwinked into it.

What do you think?
