Project Management

Think Outside the Box !

Managing any project successfully is all about Team Work combined with years of Accrued Expertise. It is an asset to have an educational background that compliments your field of expertise but "education" without "experience" is like an "arrow" without a "bow." You can never make a perfect shot with a temporary arrow unless you have a permanent bow called: "Life's Experience." Remember, you can never teach experience but you can always teach from experience.

Our world and Environment are continuously changing in many directions, forms and shapes. As a result, our daily life style, needs and priorities will change at some point.

In order to be able to cope with all changes and strike a balance, we should always think outside the box and look at things differently as sometimes the greatest ideas are just right in front of you.

The exact same thing applies to: Project Management !

Always Remember: If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change !

Rami, i'd love to see a post from you about how you handle the "Information firehose".

Steven, can you elaborate more on what you exactly mean by: Information Firehose ?

avatar
Steven Zachary Director| Alberta Health Services Calgary, Alberta, Canada
It's a term to describe information overload. The common terminology is "Drinking from the firehose". Imagine attempting to drink from a firehose, what happens?

This is what I envision while trying to keep up some days.

That's very true. I will find you the right quote for this. BUT drinking from the firehose is not the problem, the problem is with the pressure of the water going out and if the hose is pointed directly at you or sideways.

Ah, yes. I can see the engineer in you emerging Rami ;). When you figure out how to fix the pressure problem with a information control valve, I'll be the first to sign up :)

Thinking "outside the box" assumes that a box has been defined. Who established the limits? How and why?

John, this has nothing to do with Limits. Thinking outside the box means looking at the big picture of things rather than the small one. Thinking about the big picture also means to look for alternatives that can deliver the same product with less cost and time if possible.

There are no limits to what, how and why you think outside the box. This iscrelation to the person himself and how much creative amd innovative he / she is.

I'm amazed at how I jump to conclusions so easily, only to find out that I'm seeing things incompletely. It's along the lines of Daniel Boorstin's observation that “the greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” Or as Mark Twain said more casually, "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so!"

I've been particularly challenged by two podcast guests in this regard:

* Dr. Gary Klein, about his book Seeing What Others Don't: The Remarkable Ways We Gain Insights. Gary popularized the idea of pre-mortems, which can be an excellent risk management tool for us project managers. (link to Gary's interview)

* Dr. Michael Roberto, about his book Why Great Leaders Don't Take Yes for An Answer. He shares intriguing research about our cognitive biases that easily lead to making poor decisions (link to Michael's interview)

I think both experts would heartily agree with your insights, Rami. Thank you for generously pouring into our community!
