As an enthusiastic in Project Management field, I am continually searching for new PM knowledge so to improve my understanding and ability to perform as PM. And share new knowledge with my PM colleagues so to improve the profession. (Have you visited the PM Mexico Network Linkedin and FaceBook groups?)
It is easy to find a lot of self-declared PM gurus in and around PMI local chapters and other organizations alike. They have been participating as speakers in several PM congress, so it is easy to belive that they are in fact owners of incredible PM knowledge, secrets and wisdom.
But sooner than later, you find out that many of such self-declared PM gurus, obtained their PM certification several years ago, with very Little evidence of having updated their PM credential.
Furthermore, owning a PM certification is evidence of nothing but that you passed a multiple choice exam based on a Body of knowledge that in many cases is memorized but is little understood.
A big part of the self-declared gurus, have very little if any experience working in Projects, or at least working in big Projects. (Big Projects are the ones that challenge your knowledge and ability as PM). They have Little experience in projects because they are concentrated in giving speeches in congress and running their own consulting enterprises, dedicated almost exclusively to give PM training courses.
So, it is clear that passing a multiple choice exam, giving training courses and speeches is not what makes a real PM guru.
Self-declared PM gurus participate repeatedly in PM events. They receive a lot of publicity, that in short, is very useful to their PM training enterprises. Because of all this publicity and because they give PM training courses, The General Public wrongly believe that they are PM gurus.
Congresses are paid by PMI members. Congresses and the publicity around it, is where the most part of the PMI membership fees is used. So PMI members are paying the publicity that create the illusion that there are PMs gurus
Where can we find real PM Gurus?
