Project Management

In Memory of the Influence Score

From the The Big Time Blog

Managing any project successfully is all about Team Work combined with years of Accrued Expertise. It is an asset to have an educational background that compliments your field of expertise but "education" without "experience" is like an "arrow" without a "bow." You can never make a perfect shot with a temporary arrow unless you have a permanent bow called: "Life's Experience." Remember, you can never teach experience but you can always teach from experience.

Given PMI's decision to retire the subject, I thought of posting this in memory of the famous Influence Score. Below is the last screen shot I took:

There is no doubt that we are sad it is being retired as it was a source of motivation and pride for many of us but at the end of the day, it's just a number and what matters is the real genuine engagement and added value we bring to the table.

Looking forward to what's coming next and to the new platform.

Whether they admit it or not, the vast majority, if not all high influencers wanted and still want the influence score to stick around. It was the key gamification factor for these high contributors. As I have posted previously, I would love to see the engagement level of these high influencers post removing the influence score compared to prior.

Our buddy Kiron is a very good benchmark to examine. He releases his blog every 7 days like clockwork. His next one is due this Sunday. Watching (say over 3-6 months) if these releases increase, decrease or remain the same will reveal a lot about the effect of removing the influence score. I am not saying he is only motivated by that of course; not be any means. What I am saying is that I believe it is a very good indicator of the level of contribution high influencers give to the community, partly motivated by the pride they feel in maintaining a high influence score to reflect that valued contribution. I am examining other high influencers/contributors also because clearly I have nothing else better to do.

Thanks for the shout out, Sante. I've been blogging weekly since 2009 and I only joined this community in 2018 so I'd say it's a fair bet I'll continue to blog on a weekly basis regardless of what they do/don't do to further engage me here :-)

Hi Rami,

I enjoyed and appreciated being in the headliners, and was satisfied with being below-the-fold. That said, I would have likely had a panic attack if I had fallen off the board as it did become part of my daily pattern to review everyone’s placement and activities in association with mine. So, bottom line: The influence score was important to me.

That said, I believe PMI will be closely monitoring engagement levels of the past influence headliners, as that is easy to track and seemingly common sense. So, I remain positive on it all as I trust that PMI will be agile as it rolls out its new site strategy, that is, they will adapt if overall engagement heads in the wrong direction.

Now, on a different note: When you used the phrase “in memory of” in your posting, the first thought that came to my head was, “we need a memorial poem.” So, putting myself at risk of ridicule, I present the following :-)

------------------------

Dear influence, dear influence, where is your score;
Our journey hath ended, our relationship is no more.

The plans we created, the dreams I will never forget;
Are now lost to time, and time I fear has no regret.

To what heights should I reach without you as my guide;
Such things I have pondered since you left my side.

To turn the tide, I now seek through this lament;
A new journey, for which I will never relent;

Thank you influence for providing me the drive;
To help others in this profession, I will always strive.

It's true, it was a very motivating factor and we all admit this. Personally, my involvement will remain the same, unless I feel that my involvement is not valued or required anymore.

After 5 years of being committed to this community, I feel sense of ownership towards my presence here, helping others and contributing. I try to help as much as I can, maybe not much of a blog writer like Kiron but I try to add value in many other ways.

Kiron

I like your blog especially your analogy how you relate different things together.

Now you can have this screen shot for memories too and maybe PMI can get us the t-shirt of wall of fame portrait.

I totally agree with you and I love your contribution in memory of the influence score and here is one more from me:

Having no more Influence Score
Made my Heart very Sore
That was a motivation at its Core
Which boosted contribution More

Even though you are Retired
Contribution will still be Required
We should always remain Wired
And never feel Tired

Cheers

Love this post thanks Rami, am certainly sharing with the community with much sorrow of course... now the best bit was reading George’s poem and your reply.. Here is mine...

Influence score kept us Motivated
Asking thoughts when feeling Deflated
If indeed we are feeling Tired
Look up to those who’ve Inspired

Watch out though that we will be Inspected
Nonetheless its all Respected
Now hope PMI will be Pressured
To Keep us all Reassured

Thank you all :-)

Well, I will say that this was something which was good in one way or other but there were some issues also. One side it shows that those who are actively participating in the online activities were getting high influence score but those who were not able to dedicate that much of time, were getting pulled back by the score. Which is quite motivating to some members and at the same time it was discouraging too as the score changed everyday depending upon the activities one performed. So I will say there was a mixed reactions to this and I am sure that something new and better will come to replace this system. I am eagerly waiting for that as well.

I wasn't aware there was an influence score. Neither I was aware that it motivated major contributors like yourself. It will now become a treasured relic of the past. Maybe projectmanagement.com should create a virtual time capsule of some kind of the changes over the years?

Stephen, that's a good idea but as far as I know, PMI are moving into a new community platform soon.
