Bringing a sustainable future into our grasp relies upon the successful execution of thousands of well-conceived projects. Project management and project leaders are critical in achieving more sustainable practices. Executives must provide them with more flexibility in managing projects, moving past the traditional “iron triangle” of project management — managing time, budget, and quality. Sustainability cannot be achieved simply through rigid planning and traditional project targets. Project managers must be unleashed to reach these goals innovatively. CEOs should empower a new kind of sustainability-focused project manager to lead organizational transformation. The Project Management Office (PMO) can play an important role when analyzing new project ideas. It should develop new guidelines for sponsors and managers to increase the focus of their projects on such sustainable outcomes and benefits.
On the road towards a sustainable future, one of the topics which finds frequent mention is the circular economy. This requires that we look at initiatives with a total and holistic perspective. This applies to project professionals as well. How do we as project managers reconcile between project as a temporary endeavor with a circular economy which is essentially long-term and operational in nature? How can we contribute towards and benefit from this economic activity? This talk will deliberate on understanding the opportunities and challenges of a circular economy and what it presents for project professionals. Since then, it has grown considerably, with many standards being developed, training & consulting organizations set up and information disseminated among many industries and domains. At the same time today, we see there is a prospect of potential changes everywhere. Change, because of the business & political conditions, technology and the environment. The recent pandemic has only exacerbated this. All these happenings are forcing organizations, governments and professional communities to re-evaluate our ways of working to meet the challenges now and in the future. This includes the project management community as well.
The subject of sustainability has received a lot of attention in recent times. It is slowly moving from understanding it as a global phenomenon to action what we can, as professionals in business and industry, do in the larger interest of preparing for the future. For Project Managers this is a unique opportunity to contribute beyond the immediate objectives outlined for their projects.

Statistics show that globally about 33% of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted. On the other hand, we have about 11 % of world suffering from malnutrition and hunger. According to UN based WHO, even if 25 % of the food wasted is saved then it can alleviate the hunger problem.
