Project managers should understand system/software architecture. It's important for you to be an effective leader on a software project!

I agree that the project managers should understand system architecture, but also not necessary to read the book. With their experience in the technical aspects, they can understand better. However, the book recommended by you can act as the reference in some areas based on their projects complexity.

Agree that a PM should have knowledge in the project and software development lifecycle that fits within their organizational culture. Books, webinars, practical knowledge etc are all good sources of training and OTJ knowledge transfer. Consultants should have a wide variety of experience managing many types of projects. It''s also good for a PM to have general knowledge of different methodologies so their consideration of approach takes into consideration the skillset within the organizations teams. Also, consider that your project team may have an enterprise architect, a software engineer, technical or software development to be assigned for the project. Many projects may require both project and product lifecycle management so good to stay abreast of the latest tools and techniques.

@Naomi, great points. If your project and the surrounding organizational environment does have an enterprise architect/software or systems architect who's role primarily is architecture-focused, the PMs work with them on these topics. This is one way for IT PMs to be a better contributor and gain more understanding around these discussions.
