Can we work 24 hours without using technology?
| A spirited debate just took place about the significance that technology plays in our personal and professional lives. One side took the position that it is nearly impossible to go 24 hours without touching or being touched by technology. The opposing side believed it is not that bad yet but rapidly moving in that direction. Recasting that debate in the context of program and project management, has technology permeated our work to the point where it is now necessary for everyone working today needs a basic understanding of computer technology and cyber security?

State of Confusion
| In mid-September 2016, a Federal judge in New York issued a ruling that states Bitcoin constitutes a form of money. Wow, in late July 2016, a Florida Judge ruled that Bitcoin is not money Wait a minute, in 2016, the European Parliament passed a proposal to set up a task force to monitor virtual currencies, such as Bitcoin. No real decision yet!!!! But hold on, in 2015 the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission defined Bitcoins and all cryptocurrencies as commodities in their regulatory process. Time out, in 2014, the IRS ruled that Bitcoin would be considered a taxed property. That is certainly not money. Hold on, in 2014 the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) [They Have Guns] provided guidance on bitcoin exchanges and payment processors, finding that they are considered money services businesses under US law. This technology has certainly created a state of confusion!

Part Art & Part Science
| Times have certainly changed and much of that change can be attributed to technology. Today many organizations around the world are experiencing the daunting task of rapid and continuous change. All too often organizations are discovering that their infrastructure, processes, and even their workforce are slow at best, if not inflexible, when it comes to change. When these organizations fail to address these issue their future certainly looks bleak. Today organizations must be extremely responsive to change. That requires the strategic planning process to change. All together the changes and emerging technologies have come together to make strategic planning part art and science! |
Emerging Technology Status - CryptoCurrencies
| Cryptocurrencies – are a digital medium of value exchange similar to the normal currencies or money that we all know and use. These relatively new mechanism of value transfer have created a means of wealth management that is beyond restriction and confiscation of any nation or government authority. Today there are hundreds of cryptocurrencies. Mid 2015 there were over 650 active cryptocurrencies being used globally. Many are projecting new records in the cryptocurrencies will be set in 2016. In 2015, the cryptocurrency known as BitCoin was by far the most common representing 80 percent of the cryptocurrency market. In January 2016, BitCoin accelerated and reach 90 percent of the market. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency that was created back in 2009 by a developer that went by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Many organizations have or are launching projects to integrate this mechanism of payment into their eCommerce systems. |
Closing Keynote Address on Emerging Technologies and Their Impact
| I just delivered the closing keynote to a few thousand professionals from over a dozen countries. I addressed these emerging technologies and the implications on their profession. I spoke about each of these technologies individually as well as how they will feed each other and feed off of each other. Never before in history have we experienced a change of this coming era’s projected magnitude. I warned that organizations and professionals must take action now to avoid being pushed aside by those who learn about these technologies and choose to integrate them into their skill-set and suite of offerings. Here are a few of the comments I received back. “Kevin Coleman, former CSO of Netscape, is rocking the floor at #PMItech16 Key insight: #connectedcars will be a secondary tech platform” “Great presentation” “Great subject matter, excellent presentation and engaging speaker. Best of the day!!!” “Excellent presentation - best of the day” “Loved this one! Great summary of the coming technology and infrastructure changes and disruptions we can expect in the near future.” “Very captivating presentation. Incredible vision of things to come, very interesting presentation! I can imagine the new knowledge areas that will be created.” “Fascinating presentation from Kevin Coleman at #PMItech16 via @INXPO”
THANKS – to all that participated. |
