| An interesting question came up in a recent discussion about emerging technologies. How dependent are we currently on technology and how much more dependent will we be in the next 3 to 5 years? Think about that for a moment. Is it possible to go 24 hours without interacting with a microprocessor? Elevators use microprocessors, our smart/cell phones use them, cars use them and they are working on a smart-mirror that has a microprocessor in it as well. Let’s not forget our refrigerators now use them. It recognizes your face and puts up shopping list, your schedule for the day plus it can alert you to a new email. There are a growing number of professionals that are coming to believe that we are technologically dependent and that dependence is only going to increase. A recent poll found that 91% felt their business would be Totally or Very dependent on technology in the next 3 to 5 years. Monitoring the rapid evolution of technology is now mandatory for businesses of nearly any size. Without question, anticipating what is to come and preparing for it is the life preserver in this sea of change.
Note: There are some in the healthcare industry that think we need to take some aspects of technology dependence (Internet, social media, online gaming . . . ) much more seriously. In fact, they refer to it as “technology addiction.”
