Multiple sources say this is the LARGEST Ransomware attack in history!

One US Cyber Security firm estimates total (including productivity reduction) losses due to the WannaCry ransomware is likely to be between $4 and $8 billion!

A massive ransomware attack has struck an estimated 230,000 (5/15)  computers/servers in nearly 100 countries (150 as of 5/14).  Reports of the attack started surfacing May 12, 2017 and has continued to grow.  Basically the malicious software compromises a computer/server or system through a hole in the operating system (a fix was released a short time ago).  Once inside the computer/server/system, all the data files are encrypted.  When you try to access your computer you get a message that tell you to pay $300 in Bitcoins (now has gone up to $600) by May 19, 2017 or else.  What else means is the worse part.  They may delete all your data file!  Worse yet - they could change the data in those files so you do not know what is right and what has been altered.

The scary part - at the time I am writing this the malicious code known as 'WannaCry' is still spreading!

The scary part II - rumors of a new version of WannaCry without the kill-switch have surfaced!!!

WHAT TO DO NOW

  • Update your systems to include the latest patches and software updates.
  • Do not click on or download unfamiliar links or files in emails.
  • Back up your data to prevent possible loss, whether you are at a home, work, or school computer.
