Maybe in another time long, long ago, we had the luxury to take a little time before making a critical decision. We could weigh the pros and cons and, then and only then, pronounce our verdict.

Well, those times are long gone. Especially in today’s business climate, a project manager needs to make important decisions not tomorrow, not one hour from now but right now. I've found it productive to identify rules of engagement (ROE) for front-line personnel. When staff have a sanctioned frame of reference from which to make quick decisions, it becomes easier for them to support the goal, and easier for the manager to manage.

All projects, should have Fact Based Decision-making. Often the knowns will change, which will determine a different deicsion (or change control). Ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the assumptions/facts used and having a process in place to manage the risks/changes, is key to the success.
