Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an up and coming technology.  Forrester Research projected  about a 300% increase in AI investment in 2017 over what we saw in 2016.  Forbes recently posted that the AI market will grow to $47 billion in 2020. That is from $8 billion in 2016.

When Vladimir Putin comes out and states - Whoever Leads in Artificial Intelligence Will Rule the World - that clearly speaks to the importance to keeping up with this emerging technology!

Should we worry about SkyNet every becoming a reality? What kind of checks can we put in place?

Stephane, I always think the same thing when I talk/read about AI. Skynet. The machines taking over.
This is another situation where we always need to be aware of ant consequences to building something. Like when Facebook was created, did anyone think it would influence our election process.
Serious risk analysis needs to be done. Safeguards need to put put in place to mitigate the risks. And will still may "fail".
I don't have the answers. Just the questions.

All good points, Dinah. Of course, risk analysis can only take us so far. I'm sure no one would have put elections rigging by Facebook on their risk register.

I'm reminded of Asimov's robots stories where they all had the three rules embedded in their positronic brains to prevent disasters. In every story, something happened that seemed to bend the rules.

I think quantum bit computers will get us much closer to AI.

I was actually trying to remember the three rules yesterday.

I think if people brainstormed they could have come up with the fact that Facebook could be used for bullying and passing lots of false information. Also the anonymity of being online was already known. How people say things online that they would never say in person. How once information gets on the internet, it never goes away. Not a far stretch to think it could affect things like an election.

I know when Facebook Live was first released I knew there was a good chance that it would be used poorly. All I could think about was that someone was going to commit suicide live. It did not take long to happen.

So the other question is, should we not progress for fear of people using the progress wrongly?

Sorry if I am going off on a tangent here. This is such an interesting conversation.

Here are the three rules (my words, not Asimov's)
1. A robot will not harm a person
2. A robot will obey person, unless it runs afoul of rule 1
3. A robot will not harm itself, unless it runs afoul of rules 1 or 2

As risk managers, we do have to worry about crying wolf too soon. Sometimes we are too far ahead of the curve to merit consideration, let alone investment.

ADVERTISEMENTS

"It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons."
