I just completed updating my 2018 ongoing monitoring of a suite of emerging technologies. These emerging technologies are beginning to have a global impact that is likely to be 10 times greater (in $$ value) than the Internet Era of the mid to late 90s when I was at Netscape. The implication of each technology is significant. Everything combined into what is being called "The Industrial Revolution 4.0, the implications are far greater than any other period (industrial age 1 thru 3) of dramatic growth in history. The magnitude of change creates substantial issues and opportunities that will likely challenge all professions! Program and project managers will have to deliver initiatives based on these new technologies without the benefit of direct experience and lessons learned!

@ Riyadh and others - - - There are multiple technological advances that are creating new technological capabilities that will be integrated into new and unique products. Two of the hotter technologies will be the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Smart movement. The Application of IoT across nearly every sector and industry segment will create billions of $$$ of market segment. The Smart movement that includes (Smart Homes, Smart Buildings, Smart Roads and Smart Cities) be consumer an extremely broad spectrum of technological capabilities. Whether it is programs or projects for the development of the IoT products or their application across the industry sectors, the number of projects will not be trivial. As PMs we routinely leverage our past experiences on the program and projects we manage today. However, since the emerging products and capabilities are new and unique PMs will have little if any direct past experience to draw upon. That will INCREASE the degree of risk associated with these new initiatives as well as the difficulty managing the program and projects that leverage these new capabilities. With over $40 trillion estimated for the technology products markets alone, when you include all the programs and projects they will become a part of the $$$ value will be many times the technology market figures. That is what likely awaits PMs in the next 3 to 5 years.
Wow very scary if left with no advanced action. Thanks Kev for your insights on this.

I think it is time to bone-up-on the top emerging technologies.
I am just now starting to see this in the very early stages. It will likely impact me as a project manager later this year.
Thank you Kev for insight.
I am sure in next 3-5 years they will add Smart PM to their Smart movement.
