Today, innovation is a demanding strategic imperative for nearly every organization. Value integration and vision alignment are essential for innovative success given the current highly-competitive global environment. Creating an innovative solution is often the most challenging task, followed closely by actually implementing it. Let’s face it, innovation is not that easy. Often it ends up meeting substantial resistance within an organization. When asked, over 27% of professionals who were surveyed believe that fueling innovation is the main building block within their business. It is also interesting that slightly over 25% of the same individuals believed that thought leaders were the most significant part of the innovation process. Innovators are often seen as trouble-makers, those that are a bit off. However, many of them are the ones that lay the foundation for the future. Are you a trouble-maker, considered a bit off? “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Steve Jobs
Technology Dependence
An interesting question came up in a recent discussion about emerging technologies. How dependent are we currently on technology and how much more dependent will we be in the next 3 to 5 years? Think about that for a moment. Is it possible to go 24 hours without interacting with a microprocessor? Elevators use microprocessors, our smart/cell phones use them, cars use them and they are working on a smart-mirror that has a microprocessor in it as well. Let’s not forget our refrigerators now use them. It recognizes your face and puts up shopping list, your schedule for the day plus it can alert you to a new email. There are a growing number of professionals that are coming to believe that we are technologically dependent and that dependence is only going to increase. A recent poll found that 91% felt their business would be Totally or Very dependent on technology in the next 3 to 5 years. Monitoring the rapid evolution of technology is now mandatory for businesses of nearly any size. Without question, anticipating what is to come and preparing for it is the life preserver in this sea of change. Note: There are some in the healthcare industry that think we need to take some aspects of technology dependence (Internet, social media, online gaming . . . ) much more seriously. In fact, they refer to it as “technology addiction.”

Keeping Pace with Technology Change

The race is on! A recent poll found that less than 25 percent of respondents believe that most organizations are keeping pace with the rapid advancement of technology. Just less than 1/3 or responding professionals felt that less than 20 percent of organizations were achieving that task. Today’s emerging technologies stand poised to continuously advance to the point where they become prominent from being nearly nonexistent a few years ago. As they mature, their importance to setting a business strategy evident. They are poised to create new business opportunities while making several older ones obsolete. Organizations must learn what the top five emerging technologies are that stand likely to be the most enabling and disruptive to any organization. It truly is a competitive advantage. American business executive and author Jack Welch said, "An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage."
