Recently, new about a project that is on the very edge of emerging technologies out of the Netherlands has gained substantial attention lately. Their highly ambitious goal is to develop an un-hackable quantum internet! The work looks to leverage the unique attributes of quantum technology substantially increase cyber security, to defend against hackers that intercept, read, delete or alter the transactions and data flowing that flows across the Internet each and every second. Those are lofty goals and cutting-edge intentions to be sure.

Strategy requires continual monitoring and updating as new impactful technologies emerge. Identifying the strategic influence of emerging technologies on an organization is not an easy task these days. It is part art and part science and heavily reliant on up-to-date data, information and knowledge.  It also requires unique relationships with those associated with the emerging technologies and who have a solid understanding of how the technologies may impact your industry. When the up-to-date data, information and knowledge about the impactful emerging technologies is in the hands of strategists, their attention must turn to determining how the emerging technologies will impact them currently and will likely have in the coming years on their organization.

Identifying the most important technology for the near-term (next few years) often brings about fierce debate among professionals. Most believe there is no one right answer.  Often times, it depends on your industry, current competitive position and many other factors.  However, could this have changed?

Just recently, the South China Morning Post published an article about tech-driven job disruption.  In that piece, they cited the results of a workshop that was very interesting.  A whopping “74 percent of the people gathered there said they did not feel prepared for the workforce changes ahead.”  They went on and reference a World Economic Forum stat projecting that they expect a loss of 980,000 jobs between now and 2022, and the creation of 1.74 million new jobs that are all due to emerging technologies. Perhaps we should all spend some time and evaluate our skill-set and look at what skills we might need to acquire for our professional work in 2022.
