I welcome the where your organization is with "Sustained" Benefits Realization.  I have been fortunate to involved in this topic for several years and have implement Benefits Management Practices, developed processes, developed training, succeed and failed.  I've also contributed to PMI Knowledge on the topic, delivered presentations, and taught at Seminars World.  Let's chat about this topic.  I a interested in your Benefits Realization journey including the following:

1. We tried, but we couldn't make it work.
2. Our culture just isn't designed for sustaining Benefits Realization.
3. It's a fad, we do real work.
4. We're focused on delivering projects - not realizing benefits.
5. We just don't understand what it really is!
6. We need help getting started.

One of my lessons learned on challenges with Benefits Realization is that Benefits span multiple fiscal years.  Most organizations Budget Cycles are not conducive to long term sustainable benefit monitor and control.

Right after the Global Conference, I will be flying out to Vancouver to give presentations at ProjectWorld.  One of my presentations is on Influence and Advising as a Project Manager. This is my closing slide.

As a project manager, we are frequently in a position of advisor or influencer.  We need to understand our interactions have long term impact.  Not only for our self, but also our organization.  It's the feeling of value required in the trust relationship.  

The last bullet is most important, there may sometime be the "drop the mic" moment where you win a heated discussion - but the odds are good you will still need to work with that person - so give them an opportunity to save face.  That 15 seconds of satisfaction might be the prelude to months of resistance.

Whenever there is an open forum to talk about things – one of the questions I have is what topics are acceptable and which ones should I avoid?

 I want to make the challenge that almost anything is fair game is this discussion forum.  I did a little brainstorming and created the graphic above – it’s hardly intended to be an exhaustive list, but hopefully it presents the mindset that we (speaking for all “experts”) are open to professional discussion.  It may or may not be directly related to project management (although most topics can be correlated to PM work) but feel free to start the dialog.

I do have a perspective I want to share and a mindset I want to establish.  Instead of Ask the expert, think of it as collaborating with the expert.  I know I speak for a lot of the members on this blog when I say we are doing this to share ideas, experiences, failures (yes we all have them) and perspectives.  We are here to learn just as much as anybody and we all learn from each other.  So my 1 piece of advice – Don’t Be Shy. 

I was certified as a PMP last century and it is now in my DNA.  But I think it’s in all our DNA – otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this blog.  So how do I benefit from being in this blog?  I gain perspective, I grow a network, I learn new things about my profession, I hear good anecdotal  stories that bring my profession to life, I get to understand the common challenges across multiple affinity groups (industry, position, experience, age, sex, and hundreds more), and finally I get to feel a part of something bigger than myself – the community of PMI.

Since I am a visual learner – I wanted to include a graphic.  This picture is from a presentation I do on Benefits Realization and it discusses the contributors to success for various organizations.  As with almost all success lists – Communications is a major contributor.  So if you’re in Chicago – I’ll be the guy with the beard.  Come up, say hi, ask a question or give an opinion.  Even feel free to tell me a joke (but I don’t do knock-knock jokes).    

My feeling is that I can learn from you as much, if not more, as you can learn from me.  But I challenge you to build our network, open a dialog, and engage in growth.  We are all in this together – and lets leverage that (I had to use one cliché) moving forward.
