“How do you think we achieve all these? “asked Mr. Thomas Wallenta in his opening note of the PMI EMEA Congress 2018, Berlin, Germany while introducing what PMI does and what it has achieved so far. “With our 10,000 + volunteers” says Mr.Wallenta - the #DifferenceMakers. I look around the hall to see approx. 700 + #DifferenceMakers attending the opening and the key note to network, learn and share success stories- the PMI EMEA Congress 2018 in Berlin. After being all motivated and inspired to make a difference, now it was my turn to narrate my project’s success story - #B2B2BFuture “Back to the basics to build the future”. Day One of #PMIEMEA18 was full of Learning, Sharing, Networking and Growing!
| Guten Tag! What do Agility, Innovation, Transformers, Ethics, and Leadership have in common? These were the broad themes of the terrific sessions I attended on Day One of the PMI EMEA 2018 Congress at Berlin yesterday. While it is impossible to cover all the great insights and learnings in one short blog piece, I will try my best. The event was off to a great start, with a warm German welcome from Thomas Walenta of the PMI Board of Directors. He briefly touched upon how much of what PMI does would not be possible but for the passion and hard work of volunteers from the world over. Winning with Innovation In a highly thought-provoking and entertaining session, Rowan Gibson, the celebrity keynote speaker stressed on how important innovation is for business survival. He gave attendees many concrete examples of Business Innovation. A short video on a road accident showed how a proactive insurance company made life a breeze for one of the car owners, with a crash sensor-activated agent call, a drone assessing the damage, plus an Uber driver and tow truck quickly arranged. The other party? Well, he was still on hold with his insurance company! Rowan also gave attendees great tips on how an innovation project could be initiated, planned, executed and closed. Ethical Decision-making for Global Teams In a highly engaging session, Lily Murariu and Alan Richter presented on the results of a global ethics survey. Leveraging an excellent online polling tool, the duo asked session attendees decide on next steps in three typical situations involving ethical dilemmas. Lily then presented PMI’s Ethical Decision Making Framework (EDMF) as a very useful tool to help make better decisions. Agile Droplets in a Waterfall World This session by Simona Bonghez simplified a tough topic with excellent expert insights, visually appealing and elegant slides, plus excellent humor. She started with how tough a choice it is to choose between Predictive, Agile, and Hybrid. Providing many real-life examples, she gave practical tips on choosing the right approach for the right project, considering context, complexity, and constraints. Transformers! No. They weren’t talking about the famous movie series! Mohamed Khalifa and Muhammad Ilyas started by highlighting the latest trends that are truly transforming the projects of the future. Using many interactive activities, they stressed on the ten key skills project managers need to acquire to stay relevant in a rapidly-changing world. Some were: Social Intelligence, Cognitive Load Management, Virtual Collaboration, Design Thinking. The Engaging Leader “Stop Managing and Start Leading. Be an Engaging Leader,” was Ibraham Dani’s opening phrase. Mentioning key differences between managers and leaders, he listed various categories of team members such as “Doers,” “Thinkers,”, “Carers.” Ibrahim warned attendees that one disengaged and toxic team member could undo the productivity of three others. Ibrahim ended with several practical pointers on the importance of proactive leadership for project success. PMIEMEA18 - Day 1 - We are making dreams a reality. We are the difference makers
| Wow. Just wow. The first day of the PMI EMEA conference has definitely not disappointed! It started with an inspiring introduction speech and keynote from Rowan Gibson about how important it is that we keep and have an innovative mindset. I think that this set a really good precedent for the conference and made sure that we were starting the conference with the same passionate footprints.
One of the best things so far has been networking and meeting other Project Managers during the break and lunch sessions. It's been fun meeting Project Managers from all over EMEA but also to see where we have our common (innovative) goals. I think that this is going to be a great few days based on just the people that I have met so far! My favourite session of the day so far has been: "Mindfully achieving Cognitive Readiness to Manage in Changing, Complex Projects". Not only was the Presenter really great and engaging but we were able to immediately use some of the tips and had a stop for a mid session "Mindfulness session". An email surprise, a delightful trip, and being rewarded for doing something you love!
| Guten Tag, PMI world! Thirty-one days ago… A totally unexpected email popped into my Inbox. An email that really made my day! As a long-time PMI volunteer, leader and speaker, I attended several PMI events in many countries. Every one of them gave me valuable opportunities to learn, share, network, and indeed grow in the profession. Allow me to rewind another 30 days… Online information on the PMI EMEA Congress was very inviting and exciting. Historic Berlin, the venue, was even more enticing. However, with no direct volunteer role to play here, I was resigned to follow the event over social media. The surprise email changed all that. PMI was inviting me to cover the EMEA Congress onon Soci Media, to interact with peers and provide live social media updates. Here was a chance to let the entire PMI community get a taste of the conference virtually! Tamil, my mother tongue and the oldest living language, has a famous phrase that roughly translates to “Will you refuse a reward to eat sweet, delicious sugarcane?” Of course, you wouldn’t. Neither would I! A hectic few weeks required collating documentation and applying for my Schengen visa, buying flight tickets, and booking a hotel room. Landing at the Tegel airport, I was impressed with three well-known German traits put into practice: Speed, efficiency, and thoroughness. Immigration processing, baggage collection, and the taxi lines were a breeze. Traveling to the hotel, I couldn’t help notice the clean roads, plus the quaint mixture of modern skyscrapers and historic buildings. Let me fast forward back to the present. Here it is. Day One of the big event! I’m really excited! I really look forward to joining my able team members, Priya Patra and Emily Luijbregts in taking you, our valued PMI community member in front of, and behind the scenes of PMI EMEA Congress 2018. We will cover the key points made by speakers in all key sessions, interview speakers, chat with your peers, and maybe even post a quiz/trivia question or two. We will do this over Social Media channels such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook, as well as through this blog. Stay tuned to get continuous updates all through the day!
