PMs are from Mars, BAs are from Venus!

I’m sure we’ve all been on a project where it felt like your cohort was from a completely different planet! However, according to PMI research, “successful projects require a high level of collaboration between both the project, program, or portfolio manager and business analyst. Risks are minimized and project and product success rates improve when these critical roles are aligned and operate in partnership. When this alignment is missing, project performance, customer satisfaction, team morale, and the end product will be adversely impacted.”

So in case you were wondering, this explains how a business analyst made it on to the team of experts at a Project Management Institute Global Conference. With that being said…I believe it makes perfect sense that project management and business analysis share the same roof under PMI, as project management and business analysis are very closely related. Business analysis focuses on defining the features and functions that characterize a solution, where project management focuses on managing the work needed to deliver a solution with the specified features and functions. If we ignored the roles for a second and focused on business analysis and project management competencies, I’d argue, whether you’re called a business analyst or a project manager, both competencies are needed to deliver successful projects and products.

A little about me

I’m Cheryl and as much as I love project management, my heart belongs to business analysis. I am a co-author of the book Effective PM and BA Role Collaboration: Delivering Business Value through Projects and Programs Successfully (needless to say, the topic of how PMs and BAs can play nicely together is near and dear to my heart) and a core team contributor to The PMI Guide to Business Analysis (Includes the Standard for Business Analysis) slated for publication in Q4 2017. You may have been following our team’s progress here on ProjectManagement.com. My passion for business analysis has led me to create the first business analysis community within a PMI Chapter in Toronto, where I served as the chair for the past 3 years.

On a personal level, my hobbies include travelling, trying new recipes, and kickboxing (I’m little but mighty). I spent the summer cruising the Baltic Sea and can’t wait for my next adventure!

Where to find me at the conference

Joy Beatty and I will be leading a workshop on Agile Business Analysis Practices using The PMI Guide to Business Analysis on Sunday, October 29th from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Otherwise, you can find me during the Ask the PM.com Experts sessions at these times:

  • Saturday the 28th from 1:30 to 3:30
  • Sunday the 29th from 3:30 to 5:00
  • Monday the 30th from 9:00 to 12:00

I’ll also be popping in and out of the PMI Global Standards Poster Sessions on Saturday, October 28th.

If you'll be in Chicago for the Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM), I'll be sharing some tips on how to incorporate business analysis into your local chapter on Thursday, October 26th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.

I can probably ramble on forever about anything related to business analysis. Come find me if you’re up for it! 😊
